Mar-Bal Welcomes 2019 Summer Interns

With summer in full swing, our interns have settled into their specific roles and even participated in community service events alongside Mar-Bal employees. Mar-Bal strives to provide an enriching experience for each group of interns no matter their area of study. Additionally, we benefit from their fresh perspectives and enthusiasm throughout their internships.

This summer we welcomed interns from Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Virginia Tech, University of Dayton, Denison University and Vanderbilt University.

Meet this year’s Interns:

 

 

 

 

Cara Melaragno

What is your major?
Mechanical Engineering

What project or accomplishment in your academic career are you most proud of to date?
My proudest accomplishment to this date is maintaining a 3.6 GPA my first two semesters of college.

What are you hoping to gain from this internship?
From this internship I hope to gain is knowledge about how a larger corporation operates as well as what tasks engineers are expected to accomplish daily at Mar-Bal. I also hope to have strengthened my CAD skills as well as gained new skills that can help me be a better engineer in the future. I also hope to learn more about insulators.

Some of these skills I already have begun to gain. I am learning a lot about what engineers at this company do. I also have learned a lot about insulators and the drawing and CAD models surrounding them.

What are your hobbies or interests?
Some of my interests include gardening, volunteering with animals and doodling. I also am part of an engineering sorority. I am interested in sustainable energy as well.

Do you have a favorite quote or saying?
“Everything happens for a reason, even if you don’t know the reason at the time

What are your goals after you graduate?
After I graduate, first I would like to travel abroad for a month to Italy and some surrounding areas. After this I hope to find a job preferably in the field of sustainable energy, but I am still open to other careers in engineering.

 

 

 

 

Karl Bandlow

What is your major?
Accounting with a double minor in Professional Sales and Digital Marketing

What project or accomplishment in your academic career are you most proud of to date?Becoming a peer mentor for the Pamplin Leadership Academy Cohort

What are you hoping to gain from this internship?
Real world experience and an understanding of how modern sales works.

What are your hobbies or interests?
I am a huge soccer fan, specifically Chelsea FC. I also like to fish, play cornhole, and play volleyball.

Do you have a favorite quote or saying?
Not all heroes wear capes

What are your goals after you graduate?
To start a job and get experience for a couple of years. Then to start my own company with my brother.

 

 

 

 

Joseph Holmes

What is your major?
I am double majoring in accounting and finance

What project or accomplishment in your academic career are you most proud of to date?
I would say the research project I did for my financial management class on Dillard’s. I calculated a lot financial ratios, free cash flow, expected growth, and expected return for investors. It was very fun doing the research on the company and the results were very interesting.

What are you hoping to gain from this internship?
The number one thing was experience. I wanted to get a feel for the type of work I could potentially be doing for my career, and I certainly got that at Mar-Bal. I also wanted to get a feel for the professional work life and the business culture in general. Additionally, I would say I wanted to have responsibility put on me with tasks and projects to help me grow and challenge myself.

What are your hobbies or interests?
I like reading, playing video games, all kinds of sports, walking, and traveling.

Do you have a favorite quote or saying?

 What are your goals after you graduate?
First thing is to get a job but I do plan on pursuing graduate school to receive my MBA. I would like to work in a bank doing investing or financial management.

 

 

 

 

Matt Witalec

What is your major?
Mechanical Engineering

What project or accomplishment in your academic career are you most proud of to date
Getting “Top of Class” for my graduating class in high school (Top GPA).

What are you hoping to gain from this internship?
I am hoping to gain experience in the real-world that can help inform me on classes/ opportunities to pursue both later in college and in life.

What are your hobbies or interests?
I am a big Cleveland sports fan, along with Ohio State and the Blue Jackets. I played hockey in high school, and also ran cross country/ track. I enjoy going to parks for hiking and golfing.

What are your goals after you graduate?
After I graduate, I hope to work out of college with the long-term goal of getting a Masters in either business or engineering.

 

 

 

 

Noah Anderson

What is your major?
I am double majoring in computer science and art history.

What project or accomplishment in your academic career are you most proud of to date?
Art history – received three fellowship awards for being active and going above and beyond in the department. Additionally, I hold a leadership position in an art history honors society (Kappa Pi).

Computer science – I built a fully functional CPU using Y86 architecture (a subset of x86 architecture).

What are you hoping to gain from this internship?
I am hoping to gain a better understanding of IQMS and how large manufacturing companies are able to query such large data sets updating things like orders, inventory, etc. Furthering what I hope to gain, I also hope to have better insight into the world of composites.

What are your hobbies or interests?
My hobbies include flagship headphones, mechanical keyboards, music, and video games.

Work harder.

What are your goals after you graduate?
Immediately after graduation I hope to do some traveling before pursuing a career in video game design and development.
